WHY CORAL REEFS?Coral reefs – often called the rainforests of the sea – are the oceans' most diverse ecosystem. Yet, they are in severe decline, driven by a host of stressors that turn once-vibrant oases of life into barren fields of rubble. Understanding how organisms on reefs work together to create these beautiful ecosystems is critical to preserving coral reefs for future generations.

As a professor of marine science at The University of Texas at Austin, Simon seeks to understand and protect marine ecosystems. His research has taken him to coral reefs across the globe, where he has witnessed both the marvelous biology of coral reefs and their fragility in our rapidly changing world. |
Jordan M. Casey, PhD
A marine biologist and professor at The University of Texas at Austin, Jordan studies coral reef ecosystems and uses cutting-edge techniques to study food webs. She has conducted research on some of the world's most remote reefs to investigate how global change impacts coral reefs. |
